A Recap of the Earthquake
A few hours before the earthquake struck, Michael and I read Psalms 121 "The Lord will keep [us] from all harm—he will watch over [our] life." We were trekking through the Mt. Everest region after we finished teaching at a YWAM discipleship school in Jiri. The day before we nearly were in the middle of a hail and lighting storm as we were walking to the village of Shivalaya (land of the Hindu god of destruction). We later heard that a person was struck by lighting. So not knowing what the next day might bring, we decided to claim Psalm 121:1 "I lift my eyes up to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth". Little did we know a few hours later the earthquake struck. The Lord indeed "did not let our foot slip" (Psalm 121:3)
As we were walking down a hill all of a sudden I saw the bushes shaking and then the rocks moving! Michael was just in front of me and had reached flat ground. We realised we were in the middle of an earthquake! He yelled at me to jump down to where he was...I quickly jumped!! We were quite scared and shaken up but we did not realise it effected all of Nepal. As we continued walking we were shocked at the sight of houses that had fallen apart...little did we know this was just the beginning of the destruction we would see. As we continued the next few days, we experienced more earthquakes. We saw distraught people camping out in front of their cracked homes, some removing what they could from the rubble and others carrying all they could in a basket attached to their heads to start a new life up the mountains.
We abandoned our plans of traveling to Lukla and instead trekked to a nearby village where we could bus back to Kathmandu. We met up with our friend, Nyzil, who came up from Varanasi, India to help with the relief work.
Today we were able to go to Grace Orphan Home to see and encourage the children. All safe and sound, camping outside their home in a tent.
In this time of chaos we are asking God for wisdom to help those in need in an effective way.
Many of Michaels relatives homes were completely destroyed. We plan to go to their villages to survey how we can help.
We are putting a team together to work in these villages for the next few weeks and would like to purchase and distribute the following items:
- water purifier pills
- matches
- food
- tents
- supplies to rebuild homes-tin roof, doors, wood
